Social Media: becoming event-centric channel



Social media channels have been frequently used in events. Five popular channels show their event using  characteristics and these channels play an increasing important role at events.


Facebook is the biggest social media channel. “Call to Action” buttons on its events page and the collaboration with event apps have facilitated attendees to register online. In 2016, a video tab, Facebook Live give the user possibility to go live in Facebook Groups and Facebook Events. 


Instagram is increasingly used, Twitter hashtags, photos and videos (up to 15 seconds) are the features which can boost brands and greatly amply social media activity at events and trade shows to a large audience. In 2016, Instagram starts curate videos for live event (mainly on large sport events) and it create 24-hour video posting service called Stories. All for these feature have company’s increasing attention on events.

Snapschat’s “Story” feature can display event content for 24 hours, then in 2015, “Our Story” becomes available with direct application for events. It allows app users to collect and post photos and videos of event locations. Snapchat also has dedicated a live story channel for 2016 Olympic Games.


Twitter, a big active user social media. At many events, twitter hashtag is a central media search phrase and it is used across multiple social channels. In 2015, Twitter have acquired Periscope which is used at events for event marketing activity as well as for attendees to share their experiences (for up to 24 hours) with each other and to a larger audience. After the acquisition, two apps strengthened their influence and brought more convenience to the user.   

LinkedIn: After purchased by Microsoft, it has made a move to video content created by users, and it started as an invitation-only group of about 500 LinkedIn power influencers making Quroa-like short videos in responses to questions put to them.

Nowadays, social media plays an increasing important role in events, since it has created more features which help the planner to engage the attendees. For example, the link to event registration, the video and photos sharing, event hashtag. These features help people easier get involved in an event and increase the interaction between attendees also between attendees with the event organiser. In the future, social media will continue enlarging its event aspect and giving even-central offers to the audience
