How Microsoft's Holoportation is about to change the world?

No, we are not in a Sci-Fi movie but in the real world. Microsoft has begun a revolution in the field of communication and is on the verge to launch the ‘holoportation’ born from its HoloLens augmented reality glasses.

What is “holoportation”?

Holoportation is the new technology breakthrough made by Microsoft regarding the way we used to communicate. Holoportation is described as a "new type of 3D capture technology that allows high quality 3D models of people to be reconstructed, compressed, and transmitted anywhere in the world in real-time"(1). In an easier way, you can see, heard and interact with a person a world away from you as you were in the same room.
How does it work?

The principle is quiet simple. It is a camera rig setup on the device of your choice (glasses, computers and so on) which captures continuously the movement of “the remote participant” (2) in its own environment and project what it has captured in a 3D image. Obviously, Microsoft has not given more precision about how the technology worked to protect its innovation from competitors.

What could be the impact of such innovation on the event field?

We know that the business of physical events is currently suffering from new technologies like webinars which offers a less expensive and time-saver alternative to delegates and event organisers (3).
Following this logic, the Microsoft’s Holoportation is not going to facilitate the physical events ‘durability. Indeed, the ‘holoportation’ makes waves in the physical events’ course of defence based on face to face advantages.
However, because of the youth of the hologram technology, they remain limits in its implementation. One of them could be how the “remote participant” appears. Indeed, he appears in the middle of the user’s field of view like a ghost floating in the air. It could be a disadvantage to impose this technology in the event market.
