After having launched the Google Glass that
has not reach the firm’s expectations, Google is developing a new tool for
companies and individuals: the Google Cardboard.
This tools deals with virtual reality, not
to be conflated with augmented reality that was the main goal of the Google
Glass. The Google Cardboard aims to provide consumers experience and discovery.
The idea came from two French men, David Coz and Damien Henry in 2014, but the
item has been developed ever since, in order to reach customers’ expectations. And in February 2016, the 2.0 version has
been created: The Original Cardboard.
What
is the Cardboard? How does it work? How to get one?
This device is simply a mask literally made
of “cardboard”; it is composed of two lenses and a system to hold up a
smartphone. Once it is built, the consumer only has to insert its smartphone in
the space in order for the image/video to be properly diffused in the mask. The
user can download the dedicated apps to watch videos and be totally buried in
the special atmosphere.
To obtain one there are two solutions.
First, Google has selected proper suppliers and proposes to its consumers to
buy the Cardboard on the website directly.
The second way to get one is to build it by yourself, and Google provides the
pattern and the list of the additional components to succeed in building the
device.
What
are the apps proposing?
As mentioned before, Google developed
several apps so the users can use its cardboard and experience all the offer of
Google. Those apps are all available on Google Play, and the official Cardboard
app is the only app accessible for Android and IPhone.
Why use
the 2.0 version now?
The Original Cardboard, “Azur” version is a
real innovation, a high-end product with a better quality and design. This
product provides a real added value, compared to Chinese products. With a new
online shop, new partnerships like Sosh in the last French Student Fair and a
better communication campaign, the “Azur” version is used today by North Face, PSG and Volvo. Tourism companies
begin to use this technology with virtual visit of Versailles, of some Marriott
hotels and even A380 Emirates plane.
