During ITB Berlin, The Boston Consulting Group participated with a conference called “Travel and Tourism in a Hyperconnected World” where two new systems were presented, both of them based in actual technology used in a futuristic way that can be happening on 2025.
IPITA
The first one called IPITA, Integrated Proactive Intermodal Travel Assistant, is a system that facilitates the travel experience, from end-to-end, when inconvenience of weather, delays or cancellations on transportation arrive. It detects the situation in real time and informs the user not only the problem but it gives him the alternatives he could take. At this point, the user can chose the preferable alternative, in terms of time and price. The system will automatically make all the changes in all the transportation modes, and will make bookings and payments. All this happening in a system fully context aware and through smart devises as data glasses or contact lenses that display the information in one single interface.
ACIS
The second system is called ACIS, Automated Check-In and Border Control Mechanism, that will easily eliminated all the unbearable queues at the airport. The system based its technology on biometric identification, scanning technologies and electronic visa procedures. The user will arrive to the airport and with his fingerprint will do the check in and in a Security Speed Check the registered traveler will be identified and approved under his profile and risk class; All the procedure happening without a great effort and under the highest security and privacy standards.
The future
Does it will be possible for 2025? As futuristic as it sounds, the technology used already exists but as the Boston Consulting Group put it themselves there is a need of:
- Standardized data exchange
- Regulatory actions
- Legal Framework
- Data ownership issues clarified
We are in an era where everything can be possible but the main issue is the cooperation among all the entities required to make it happen. Today, information is power but this power needs to be shared in order to create new options. Technology is more than a part of the new travel world, is changing it, becoming more proactive, easy to use and generating new needs from the users.
What is not to like? It is true that there are many issues to deal with as legal framework of the used technology; an example can be the extent of the biometric identification. But the fact is that maybe the user is not ready now but he can be in 2025. These technologies based on optimization of experiences and many more that make us feel in fiction movies can be realized and make the travel a pleasure from the beginning to the end.
