Future use of the portable
devices into airplanes: will Wifi Access on flights be possible?
In the area where the majority of people is connected
all the time by Smartphone, tablets, PC...there is still one moment where we had
to switch them off and have it spend for a long time. It was during airplane
flights. It is going to change and the regulations will evolve.
In
Europe, companies are taking the initiative to introduce the use of portable
devices during the flight. In fact Easyjet had submitted a proposal to the
Civil Aviation Authority to change the way of flying from the travellers’ point
of view. Recently approved, the proposal can now open new schemes for better
travelling conditions. Passengers can now use their electronic devices in
flight mode during the all flight (BreakingTravelNews, 2014). On the other side
of the Pacific, one leading company is taking advance regarding the leading
change for mobile devices use during the flight.
Gogo
is the leading company based into the in-flight connectivity and wireless
facilities solutions. Thanks to its alliance with airlines (mainly from North
American), the company appeared to be the best alternative for reaching aircraft
commercial equipment. The use of its technology into airplanes, will ease and
positively change the way of travelling especially for travellers who want to
have their smartphones on and an Internet connection during flights. (Gogo, 2014).
Moreover,
accessing emails via mobile devices applications will dramatically lead to one
aspect of the future: sharing information during short and long haul
destinations.
The
other aspect is that a technical services agreement (TSA) had been approved
with Boeing to incorporate this technology solution into commercial aircraft. (Gogo,2014).
Working
with “Aircell” a leading provider on in-flight connectivity equipment and
services to the business aviation market; Gogo plans to increase the Internet
access through a specialist of the business aviation travel experience. Due to
its core activities, Aircell will enhance a new trend, which is to advice, and
provide solutions to specifically answer customer needs, adapted to aircraft
type and geography location.
To
conclude, flights won’t be moments where people are disconnected in the future.
The allowance of using mobile devices combined with Wi-fi installed more and
more, it will be a real change for travellers. The reasons to until now forbid
the use of mobile devices were related to the security of people during the
take off and landing steps. Due to the global growth of the mobile devices
market, to be competitive, airlines have opened a new segment to satisfy
customers’ needs: Wifi Access. The Internet access is going to be largely
diffused into the aviation companies and now the challenge is to provide
efficient wireless connection among low to high cost carriers. Nowadays,
aircraft manufacturers have certified low specific electromagnetic radiation
into the building of airplanes, in comparison to the past that didn’t use this
specific technological improvement and forbid the use of mobile devices due to
the high security risk of interferences during the flight.
