Coachella: New ways of use IT in concerts

By Dayris Martinez and Gabriela Vega

I personally love Coachella, I mean is everybody dreams to go there! and if is not you shouldn't read this article at all... Who doesn't love girls with flowers and good music?... and if that is not good reason to love this festival as much as I do, look of what Coachella is doing in order to make these experience even better.

(From Google)

Yes, you guessed right! They are using IT tools to do that, amazing right? From interactive live-streaming to customised experience apps... They really seem to know what they are doing, Coachella is known for its amazing digital marketing strategy. (More that 4 million fest related tweets and shared almost 1/2 million of photos) Woow and not satisfied with that they were navigating with an interactive map on youtube using their festival app channel.

"Technology is allowing festivals, artists and creators in general to connect even deeper with their audiences" says Matt McLernon, Youtube's communications manager. For the past five years, YouTube has live streamed the festival, with a 99,000 daily viewers could catch performances via three festivals channels.

"Coachella may be the longest-running live-streamed festival on YouTube, but many major festivals are now streaming their sets — and they’re no longer sticking to just one platform."

So if they want to survive Coachella has to think of new Technologic tools to have an added value, which is what they recently did with having partnerships with TeePublic and other companies, so they still have a long way to go in these new ways of use technology in music festivals, but we should not have any doubt that they will do.

Let’s Go Viral

“Let’s Go Viral”
By Hermilo Bravo, Lei Chen and Xochitl Ledesma

We learned that viral videos is a quick way to engage with current and possible consumers on social media. However, a new type of viral video has emerged, it is the single-shot, easily digestible, and emotionally provoking cousin of a video – a meme. Memes have taken over main stream social media as mutually shared emojis among today’s digitally connected population. The way that it works is that a single image is used to represent an underlying feeling or meaning behind the text that will be superimposed on the image.
For example, you have the meme of the baby gripping his right hand which represents success. Many times the meaning of success is used ironically, when words, such as “Final Exams finished, now to party,” are written over it to show the irony of the event and the lack of success achieved. So the question is how can event managers use these images to promote their events? Well that is simple there are three key ways which I will go into deeper detail about - “I do not always give advice for free, but when I do it is excellent advice!”

#1 Create Your Own Branded Meme
This option requires the highest level of development because you will be starting from scratch and must put
a lot of strategic thought into what image will engage internet goers to not only like, but reuse your image. With that said, there are brands that have done this successfully such as Dos Equis and Old Spice. If the meme is able to go viral it will gain more impressions of your brand to consumers than Facebook, could offer!

#2 Adopt a Meme Image
Why rebuild what is already working! In this option, the aim is to leverage an existing popular meme and update the content to promote your event appropriately with the meaning of the meme. That is to say that you must be very careful that you understand what the meme image represents within the social web to ensu
re you do not send the wrong message with your meme. As mentioned above, sometimes memes can be used ironically, though harmless in general, for a brand this could cause more harm than good, especially if that ends up going viral due to the wrong messaging. So the lesson with this option is to make sure you have expert 15 year olds on staff to ensure you understand these complex messaging tools and avoid a Mcdonald-sized mishap when they added the lines “I’d hit that” to a meme.

#3 Integrate a Meme into Your Original Marketing
Probably the best option when it comes to minimizing backlash from the social media gods. This involves creating your own event marketing images or videos that integrate popular memes, such as adding the “Y U NO” stick figure in your marketing campaign video. This form of meme integration relies on the properly using the associated feeling internet users have given a specific image or action to create that sense of familiarity between clients and your marketing material.

Each option presents benefits and challenges when it comes to integrating these illusive, yet popular forms of marketing into event campaigns. Fortunately, these tools will not be going anywhere any time soon and you still have time to learn, enjoy and integrate this growing form of standardized emotional response mechanisms.
Y U NO TRY?

ITB Berlin 2017: New app guides visitors to the show
Gonting WANG, Xianqing DONG
Abstract:
During ITB Berlin 2017, there are some main breakthrough on event management technology. It launched an ITB App which provides participants with all the ITB Berlin information.
The first innovation for this app is the new 3D floor plan which shows all the exhibition booths and meeting session rooms. By aligning with GPS, the floor plan will guide participants to find ways and check their location if they get lost. The second function is the new private chat room which allows visitors to get in touch with each other more easily. The third thing is that by connecting to the virtual Market Place, business visitors can find those exhibitors they prefer to do business with. What’s more, the app also provides and update previous service, such as highlighting event date, “What’s on now” section and ITB Live Stream.

Our thoughts:
Thanks to SKEMA organizing the Berlin trip, we all have the chance to visit ITB Berlin in person. Without any doubt, the event App published by the event organizer and can be free download from the app store did help us a lot with tons of information.

What surprised me was the online stream function, which provided live stream for each convention. I was there attending the convention in the first day of ITB, honestly speaking, the speakers voice was not able to be heard clearly due to the noise caused by people coming in and going out. In the morning of second day of the ITB, I turned on the event app and tried to get some information about that days events. And I accidently open the live stream channel, which had better sound and view than visiting in person. Information sharing is a very important value for the event, the technology offers us the different form of communicating.

What is the biggest challenge for event app? As the visitor of the event, I feel disturbed when I have to download one app for one event, which usually will last for only three to four days. In order to increase the number of the users, the event app developer should try to figure out one way that people can easily get access to the function that provided by app without installing the app.
